Conservation Works

In last decades of XX centaury an increased interest in conservation of old buildings was evident mainly due to irremediable damages that follow after demolition of architectonic buildings resulted from economic reasons. Change in transport sector resulted in other functions of railway stations. Destruction of Penn Station in New York, an unique work of Roman clasicism style designed by McKim, Mead & White studio (1911, demolished in 1963), was a stimulus for reconstruction and development of old Union Station in Washington (around 1975) and careful conservation of Grand Central Station in New York. Restaurant and conservation of Gare d"Orsay in Paris, performed by Gae Aulenti (born in 1927),where Musee d"Orsay was hold (1986), comprises very successful example of application of old buildings for background of modern works of arts located in an original, preserved historical space.

XIX century building in Budapest was the subject of conservation works performed by EFA studio - Erick Egeraat (born in 1956) Associated Architects for ING Bank. A new structure was placed in the centre yard of the old building and it was elevated above the original roof, and as a result on the gable of the old building a new building was established. Office spaces were located on first floor surrounding the centre space, while the structure on the roof of „whale" glass amorphous shape along with wooden ribs offered a bank meeting hall. An unusual interior was imitated with a blue carpet of irregular shape, with abstractive brown patterns.

Glass sliding door without frames open towards the bank meeting hall. Ribs from ply timber that comprise an interior shell over XIX centaury old building, provide for futuristic appearance. On the left there is glass lift shaft. Around a shiny conference table there are chairs designed by Charles Eames.Source: John Pile "Historia Wnętrz", Arkady 2000
